This case study of community-based coastal rehabilitation shows how research and technology in environment-friendly coastal rehabilitation can be implemented in local community conservation initiatives. The project is coordinated by the Desa Tuwed local community and Kelompok Subak Puspa Sari, and scientifically supported by the Southeast Asia Center for Ocean Research and Monitoring (SEACORM). The preliminary programme is scheduled for 10 months and its scope includes the study of coastal hydrodynamics, coastal vegetation classification, silviculture management, education, replanting and monitoring. The project aims at long-term coastal rehabilitation with greenbelts protecting coasts from erosion and tsunamis. It also targets the improvement of coastal environments to sustain the nutrient needs for fisheries and aquaculture.
